M.A.R.S - the Mara Animals Rehabilitation Sanctuary - was established on Mara Farm 8 years ago and has helped, given home to and rehabilitated numerous species of injured and mistreated mammals, reptiles and birds in that time. At present the farm is home to miniature horses, raccoons, South American burrowing owls, meerkats, peacocks and wild boar. An reptile centre is currently being completed and will soon house an interesting selection of reptiles including Cayman crocodiles, Boa-constrictors, reticulated pythons and various lizard species. Registration as an NPO is being processed and once finalised will allow M.A.R.S to expand thier aims. The present focus of M.A.R.S is to provide a protected and structured environment for the rehabilitation of injured, endangered or mistreated animals at a dedicated site specifically allocated and designed for such purposes.
M.A.R.S plans to offer education, advice and assistance to the local Eastern Free State Highlands community in the basics of conservation and to promote public awareness on the dangers of indiscriminate use of agricultural poisons, predator traps etc. |
